Kevin Manuel is the new Data, Government Information, Political Science and Labour Studies Librarian in the James A. Gibson Library as of January 15, 2007. He will also be the library representative for Statistics Canada’s Data Liberation Initiative (DLI), Canadian Association of Public Data User (CAPDU) and Data in Ontario (DINO). He has a BA Hons. Anthropology (Windsor), MA Sociology (Windsor), and MLIS (Western). Previously he worked co-op at University of Waterloo in the Reference Department at Dana Porter Library.

Marian Press has been appointed as Acting Director, Information Resources and Services, OISE Education Commons, and Chief Librarian, OISE Library University of Toronto effective July 1, 2007.  She will continue until June 2008 or until a permanent
Director is chosen.

Ryerson University librarian Suzette Giles has been named the outstanding Academic Librarian in a province-wide competition adjudicated by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Awards Committee. 

Ms Giles, who has worked to build and promote the specialized social science and geospatial data collections at the Ryerson University Library, will receive the 2006 OCUFA academic librarianship award at a June 8, 2007 ceremony in Toronto.

Laurie Scott has been appointed Head, Public Services and Education in the Bracken Health Sciences Library, Queen’s University, effective August 1, 2007.  Since 1997, Laurie has been Executive Director of the Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto, based at the Gerstein Science Information Centre, University of Toronto Libraries.

Catherine Baird has been appointed to the position of Marketing, Communications, and Outreach Librarian. Catherine’s official start date is June 18, 2007. Catherine comes to us from York University where she is an Adjunct Librarian at the Scott Library. Catherine is also a section editor for Partnership: the Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research. Catherine’s primary responsibility will be for developing and implementing a marketing and communications programme for the library.

John Fink has been appointed to the position of Digital Technologies Development Librarian. John comes to us from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he held the position of Electronic Information Services Librarian. John’s official start date is August 1, 2007. John’s primary responsibility will be for managing our ILS. We’re thrilled that John will be joining our team and look forward to making use of his experience with open source solutions. Shawn McCann has been appointed to the position of Immersive Learning (Gaming) Librarian. Shawn comes to us from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where he is the Digital Projects Librarian and has also held the position Web Librarian. Shawn’s official start date is August 1 2007. Shawn’s primary responsibility will be for exploring, creating, supporting and promoting library resources through gaming and virtual worlds. In particular, he brings strong technical skills; library experience; grant writing; classroom teaching experience; and, of course, a personal interest in gaming. This position will provide an opportunity for the libraries to provide leadership in research, teaching and learning through the implementation of gaming environments and virtual worlds.

Nicholas Ruest has been appointed to the position of Digital Strategies Librarian. Nick comes to us from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where he will be graduating from the IMLS-funded program for “Recruiting 21st Century Digital Projects Librarians”. Nick’s official start date is September 4, 2007. Nick’s primary responsibility will be for managing our digital library initiatives. In particular, he brings strong technical skills; experience with libraries, archives, and museums; experience with multiple formats, including three-dimensional;and a personal interest in digital music.

Dan Jakubek has been appointed to the new position of Map and GIS Librarian at Ryerson University Library. Dan has been working as the GIS and Data Technician since January 2005. He worked on his MLIS at the University of Western Ontario part-time and has just been awarded his library degree. Dan also has a Masters in Spatial Analysis from Ryerson (2002), and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and GIS from McGill (2000). From 2002 to 2005 Dan worked in the North West Territories as a Lead GIS Specialist with the Inuvialuit Land Administration/MacKenzie Project Environmental Group.
