Karen Nicholson has been appointed to the position of Teaching and Learning Librarian. Karen’s official start date is September 4, 2007. Karen is currently employed as Liaison Librarian and Information Literacy Coordinator at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, McGill University where she has been since July 2002. In this role she is responsible for collection development, liaison, and instruction for the department of Langue et littérature françaises and the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. She is actively involved in information literacy instruction and outreach at McGill: coordinates the Humanities and Social Sciences Library’s “Discover Your Library” program and am responsible for implementing a new campus-wide orientation program for McGill’s thirteen branch libraries. She works with several campus units, including Teaching and Learning Services, the Academic Integrity Subcommittee and the First-Year Office, to raise awareness of information literacy at the University. On a broader level, as a member of the CREPUQ Groupe de travail sur la formation documentaire, she also collaborated with colleagues from other Québec universities on information literacy issues and projects. She is a graduate of ACRL’s Information Literacy Immersion Program and brings a strong understanding of learning theory and libraries. She has put this knowledge into practice in the workshops and classes she facilitates for students, librarians and faculty at McGill and in teaching the Introduction to Library Research Practices (INST/INSZ 250) course for the past three years at Concordia University.

Ryerson Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Madeleine
Lefebvre as Chief Librarian, effective August 28, 2007.

Madeleine has been the University Librarian at Saint Mary’s University
in Halifax since 1999. Previously, she was Director of Library Services
at Mount Royal College, Calgary for 12 years, and Public Services
Librarian at Okanagan University College in Kelowna, British Columbia
for 7 years.

Amongst her many professional activities, Madeleine is past President of
the Canadian Library Association and appointee to the editorial board of
the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science.  She is the
recipient of many awards, including the Atlantic Provinces Library
Association Merit Award in 2006. She is also a member and former chair
of the Council of Atlantic University Libraries and founding member of
the Canadian Research Knowledge Network.

New Members Join Canadian Committee on Cataloguing

Two new representatives have joined the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing including Tim Knight, Head of Technical Services for Osgoode Law Library at York University. Tim is the Canadian Association of Law Libraries Representative on the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing.

We are very pleased to announce that Sarah Coysh will joining the Libraries on June 1 as E-Learning Librarian. Sarah has a B.A. in French and Music, a B.Ed. and an M.Ed. from Queen’s University, as well as her MISt from the University of Toronto. Sarah is not entirely new to York: she has been working part-time providing reference service at Frost Library during the past year. Sarah’s office location and home department will be Frost Library.

We would also like announce that Rajiv Nariani, has begun (on May 15) as Science Librarian at the Steacie Science & Engineering Library. Rajiv has a B.Sc. in Microbiology from Kolhapur University, India, an M.Sc. in Dairy Microbiology from the National Dairy Research Institute, India, and an MES from York University, as well as his MISt from the University of Toronto. Rajiv had been working at the Steacie Library as a Reference Assistant since 2003.

The selection committee is happy to announce that Bill Denton has accepted the position of Web Librarian at the Peter F. Bronfman Library effective June 25, 2007. Bill has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Trinity College and a Master of Information Science, both from the University of Toronto. He comes to York with experience as Web Librarian for Toronto Public Library, Taxonomy and Metadata Specialist at the Hospital for Sick Children and a Senior Programmer from the Canadian telecommunications company Allstream. He has contributed to web-site development, developed online thesauri, and served as webmaster.

The search committee is pleased to announce the Haiyun Cao has accepted the position of Bibliographic Service Librarian, effective September 1, 2007. Haiyun, who graduate from library science at McGill University, is currently working at the University of Florida in Gainesville as Digital Project Metadata librarian where she does original cataloguing and participates in metadata harvesting projects. Haiyun also has a Masters of engineering, computer science and engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, China. Her background experiences include teaching computer science, research on OCR software for digitized manuscripts and project management for World Bank projects.
