On July 6, 2007 the Education Centre Library at Nipissing University and Canadore College welcomed Charlotte Innerd to the permanent position of Manager, Reference and Information Services. Charlotte has a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario; a Master of Arts in Modern History from St. Mary’s College, University of Durham, Durham UK; and an Honours Bachelor of Arts, History from the University of Windsor, Ontario. Charlotte has been acting Manager of Reference and Information Services for the past year and is a deeply committed professional, serving on the Ontario Council of University Libraries Information and Resources Group, as well as on the CORIL repository project.

Charlotte replaces Laura Sinclair who has returned from a one year maternity leave and rejoins the staff as the Public Services Librarian for Distance Education. Laura brings to the position both education and experience, holding the degrees of Master of Library and Information Science, University of Western Ontario; Bachelor of Science, University of Western Ontario; and Bachelor of Education, Nipissing University. A graduate of Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Education program, Laura is well acquainted with the specific needs of the University’s Education students. In addition, Laura has broad experience within the library profession with emphasis on Collection Development, Information Literacy and Off Campus Services.

Jennifer Smith joined the staff of the Library in April as the Communications Manager, a collaborative position with the Department of Marketing and Communications. Jennifer will help raise awareness of Library services among faculty and students, help raise the profile of the Library within the University, and assist in securing additional sources of revenue. Jennifer had been the University’s Coordinator of Research Promotion in the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research) since 2002. She also has experience at Queen’s in the International Programs Office of the Faculty of Arts and Science as an Administrative Coordinator, and in a joint placement between the Office of International Programs, Faculty of Health Sciences, and the International Centre for the Advancement of Community Based Rehabilitation as a Research Assistant. Prior to coming to Queen’s, Jennifer worked as a Research Assistant in the Bioethics Department of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, and the Department of Philosophy at York University. Jennifer has a B.A. (Honours with Distinction) from University of Toronto, an M.A. in Philosophy from York University and a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s.

Nasser Saleh has been appointed Integrated Learning Librarian in the Integrated Learning Centre and Engineering and Science Library. Nasser brings to this position teaching and project management experience, both as a librarian and as an engineer. He has a B.Sc. (Honours) in Electric Engineering, Telecommunications and Computer Engineering (University of Khartoum), an M.S. in Library and Information Science (Syracuse University), an M.S. in Telecommunications and Networks Management (Syracuse University), as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Information Security Management (Syracuse University). Nasser has worked as a Project Manager for a leading Palestinian contracting and industrial group, as a System Administrator for an internet service provider, and as a part-time lecturer at Al-Azhar University, Gaza. He has also been a consultant to the Palestinian Investment Fund, Information Coordinator for the British Council, and has worked as an independent IT consultant for the Academy for Educational Development, a USAID-funded project to improve library resources in 11 Palestinian universities.

Central Technical Services has two new appointments to its department. Lynn Calhoun will be the Serials and Electronic Resources Librarian effective August 1st. She brings experience in serials operations, electronic resource management, and systems programming and administration. Lynn has been Systems Librarian at Arkansas Tech University since 2004, where she administered the Voyager ILS and served as Library webmaster. From 2001-2004 she was the Music/Multimedia Librarian at Arkansas Tech, and from 1998-1999 she was Serials Coordinator at Central Michigan University. Lynn has a B.A. in Music Education (Arkansas Tech University), an M.M. in Music Composition (Michigan State University), an M.L.S. (Indiana University), an M.S., Information Technology (Arkansas Tech University), and is currently working on a B.A. in German.

Xia Li will commence her appointment as Cataloguing Librarian on September 1st. This is a two-year, non-renewable term appointment. Xia has been employed as a cataloguer at Library Services Centre, Waterloo, since 2003. During 2002 and 2003, she worked as a part-time Public Services Librarian at the S. Walter Stewart Library, Toronto Public Library. Xia also has teaching experience, having worked as a Teaching Assistant at Bowling Green State University and as a lecturer and instructor at Xi’an Foreign Languages University, Xi’an, China. Xia received her MLIS from University of Toronto in 2002. She also has a B.A., English Language and an M.A., English Language and Literature, both from Xi’an Foreign Languages University, as well as an M.A., Rhetoric and English Writing from Bowling Green State University.

York University acquires Mariposa Folk Fest archives

TORONTO, June 6, 2007 – York University is the new, permanent home to the archives of the Mariposa Folk Festival – one of the longest running and most important music festivals in Canadian history.

“We are thrilled with the treasure trove of historical artifacts that the Mariposa archives offer,” said Michael Moir, head archivist at York University. “Students and faculty will be able to do a wide variety of interdisciplinary research with this high-quality, very relevant material.”

York University acquired the records to this premier international folk festival following a search of more than a decade by the Mariposa board of directors that resulted in a donation-in-kind through the York University Foundation. The Mariposa archives will now occupy a vibrant and public home within York University’s Scott Library where they will be available to the public and used by a variety of disciplines for research.

“We now hope that others will be inspired to donate valuable Mariposa memorabilia to this collection with the confidence that they will be well-preserved and put to valuable scholarly use,” said Chris Lusty, president of the Mariposa Folk Festival. “We are pleased that York University will not only provide the necessary physical setting to house the artifacts but also public access for this great historical collection.”

Until recently the Mariposa collection – conservatively valued at more than $1.5 million – was locked away in storage in a downtown Toronto basement. A properly-maintained environment was vital to protect the material. York will provide that and more as it makes the included recordings, primary documents, images and other memorabilia available for education and research.

“This truly is a gift that will keep on giving long into the future for the entire York community and beyond,” said Phillip Silver, dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at York. “This material can be seen as one of the greatest collections of Canadian folk music in existence and we are proud to play a role in breathing new life back into this important element of Canada’s cultural history.”

The Mariposa Folk Festival, an annual event that began in Orillia, Ontario, in 1961 helped to launch the careers of Canada’s most notable recording artists including Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, and Murray McLaughlin.

The wide range of material in the collection, including a large quantity of sound recordings and publicity documents submitted to the festival’s organizers annually, offers astounding research potential for the study of folk music in North America during the second half of the twentieth century.

“Gifts such as the Mariposa collection help to fortify York’s growing strength in the area of research. We recently launched ‘York to the Power of 50’ to celebrate nearly 50 years of exponential growth and dynamic achievement as we approach York’s 50th anniversary in 2009. To date we have $125 million in commitments towards our $200 million campaign goal. This gift helps to support York’s vision to become a leading international centre for interdisciplinary research and teaching, ” said Paul Marcus, president and CEO of the York University Foundation.

The Mariposa archives will be available as a fully-accessible reference collection at Scott Library in September, in time for the fall semester at York. York University’s Keele Campus will also be the new home of The Archives of Ontario beginning in the spring of 2009.

Lise Doucette joined the Allyn & Betty Taylor Library staff at the beginning of June as a Research and Instructional Services Librarian with special responsibility for Research Support. She will begin her work in this new role by defining the needs of research groups served by Taylor Library and then developing and delivering library services to these groups specifically designed to support the research-intensive environment at Western. Lise obtained her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Dalhousie University. Previously, Lise held the position of Data, Government and Geographic Information Librarian at Laurentian University.

Sam the Record Man will go on eternally if  Ryerson takes over the building.  Sam Sniderman Founder backs expropriation bid to make his defunct store university’s `front door’
 

Ryerson University will today announce plans to ask Queen’s Park to expropriate the Sam the Record Man building, a move fully supported by the company’s founder.
 

“I want Ryerson to get the building,” Sam Sniderman, 87, said yesterday when told of the university’s play for 347 Yonge St., which he established as the flagship store in 1961. “It’s a relationship we’ve had from the very beginning of time. We’ve grown simultaneously.
 

“Now, Sam’s is no more. But it will go on eternally if Ryerson takes over the building and establishes it as their front door on Yonge St.,” he said in an interview.
 

Both Sniderman and Ryerson president Sheldon Levy prefer a negotiated deal for the recently designated heritage building, which ceased operating as Sam’s on Saturday.

If successful in getting the building, Ryerson plans to expand library and study space west across an alley and into the upper floors of Sam’s. It would look for partners to operate commercial space on the ground floor
