Liz Bayley,a graduate of McMaster University (B.A. French & Russian, 1972) and of the University of Western Ontario (Masters of Library Sciences) has been appointed Director of the McMaster Health Sciences Library effective April 15, 2008..  She began her library career at McMaster in 1982, moving to the Health Sciences Library in 1986.  Since then she has had a variety of positions, most recently as Acting Director / Head of Systems, since January 2008.

In 2005,  Bayley was recognized for her significant contributions to McMaster with the MUFA Faculty/Librarian Award for Outstanding Service.

She holds a part time appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing.  Bayleyhas tutored in the nursing and medical programs, coordinates special evidence-based medicine activities for nursing and medical students and has contributed to international workshops on evidence-based practice.

A well known member of her profession, Liz participates in a number of professional associations and is a past President of the Canadian Health Libraries Association.  Her research interests include information literacy, lifelong learning, educational assessment and evidence-based practice.

Ms. Leslie Weir, President of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) announced the appointment of Mr. Brent Roe as Executive Director effective April 14, 2008. Brent Roe has held the post of Associate University Librarian, Information Services, York University since 2003. He has a MLIS from the University of Alberta as well as a BA in Psychology and MA in Ancient History. Brent is an alumnus of the Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute and the ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians.

Maria Buda has been appointed to the Dentistry Library with responsibility for reference and circulation services, including library instruction and courseware support. Maria is also the Faculty of Dentistry’s webmaster. Maria completed her Masters of Information Studies degree at the University of Toronto in 2007. Before joining the Faculty of Dentistry Library, she worked as a Records and Information Management Assistant at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Strategic Planning and Implementation Branch. As a student, she worked for the Bora Laskin Law Library, Faculty of Music Library, and Caven Library at Knox College.

Pauline Rousseau has recently joined the University of Toronto Scarborough Library as a part-time Reference Research and Instruction librarian. She is a recent graduate of the Master of Library and Information Science programme at the University of Western Ontario, and holds an Honors B.A. in Art History and History from the University of Toronto. Her previous experience includes positions at King’s College Library, University of Western Ontario, the Dorothy Hoover Library at the Ontario College of Art and Design, and the Planning and Development department of North York Central Library.

Miriam Ticoll is the new Executive Director, Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto (HSICT), effective January 7, 2008. Miriam has an extensive background in management and strategic planning and broad experience as a consultant on health information projects. She has led projects for organizations such as the Canadian Health Network, the Canadian Mental Health Association (Ontario), CIHI, Canada Health Infoway, the Wellesley Institute, the Ontario Women’s Health Council, and the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance, to name a few. Prior to consulting, Miriam was the Director of Information Services at the Roeher Institute, a research institute which focuses on issues affecting people with intellectual disabilities.

Spiros Tsonis is serving as the Acting Manager of the UTL at Downsview high density storage and preservation facility, while Mark Phillips is on leave during 2008. Spiros is a graduate of Seneca College, from the small business management programme. He has supervised in a variety of shipping, warehousing, and construction environments and has a part-time contracting company of his own. He has worked in the U of T Library since 2004, as a member of the library patrol staff and as the Supervisor of the Extended Hours service in the Access and Information Services Department of Robarts Library.

New Liaison Librarian
We are pleased to welcome Ryan Allworth, who will serve as liaison librarian for Business and Economics for the next 12 months. Since receiving his MLIS at McGill, he has worked at UBC’s Management Research Library, Price Waterhouse Coopers’ Tax Research Centre in Toronto, and at Simon Fraser University.

Sergey Lobachev begins a four month co-op placement at McMaster University Library in January 2008.  He will explore the role of the library in helping students to develop 21^st century fluencies and will also provide research help (reference service) in McMaster’s Thode Library of Science & Engineering.  Sergey has equivalent Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in History (1998) from St. Petersburg State University in Russia and has completed 2 terms as an MLIS student at The University of Western Ontario.

Janice Adlington began her position as E-Resources Librarian at McMaster University Library on October 1, 2007. Janice graduated from the University of Toronto in 1991 with an MLS. Before coming to McMaster she worked as the Electronic Resources Librarian at Vanderbilt University (Nashville), a position she was appointed to in July 2006. From October 2000 - June 2006 Janice was the Bibliographer for Classics, Philosophy, and Psychology at Vanderbilt University where she provided reference service in the humanities, social sciences, and arts.

Matthew Thomas has been appointed to a non-renewable replacement appointment as a Public Services Librarian in Bracken Health Sciences Library until June 30, 2008. He has been working at Bracken on term appointments since September 2005. Before coming to Queen’s, Matthew was employed by the Queen’s Borough Public Library, New York City, initially as a librarian in the Social Sciences Division, then as a CyberLibrarian in the Cyber Centre and finally, as the supervisor of the Cyber Centre.  Matthew is a graduate of the University of Waterloo (B.A., Philosophy, 1999) and he obtained his MLIS from the University of Western Ontario in 2000.

David Burke has been appointed Research and Instruction Librarian until April 30, 2008. He will act as library liaison to the departments of French Studies, Languages & Linguistics, German, Italian, Spanish and Latin American Studies. He will also provide reference services, participate in collection development and management activities and provide library instruction. David has a B.A. in History (Carleton University), a B.Ed. (University of British Columbia), an M.A. in Latin American Studies (London School of Economics), a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Applied Information Technology (Information Technology Institute) and an MLIS (University of British Columbia). Prior to pursuing a library career, David taught high school in British Columbia. He has been a reference librarian at the University of New Brunswick Library, Saint John campus. Most recently, he has worked as Corporate Records Manager for the City of Saint John, where he designed, developed and implemented the roll-out of a records management solution for the city. His work for the City of Saint John includes the development and delivery of records access instructional programs and reference services, and the implementation of a program to digitize Council minutes.

Lesley Wilde has been appointed to the position of Continuing Teacher Education Reference Librarian in the Education Library. This is a two-year, non-renewable appointment until August 31, 2009. Lesley holds a B.A. Honours (History), a B.Ed., and an M.A. (History) from the University of Toronto. She received her MLIS from the University of British Columbia. Lesley is an experienced Ontario secondary school teacher and Ontario curriculum writer. Since acquiring her MLIS, she has been the Head of Library at the Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School in Aurora. In this position, Lesley used her consultative skills to develop and implement a user friendly website focused to meet students’ and teachers’ information needs.

Ellen Symons

Rick Stapleton starts his position as Archivist Librarian on November 5, 2007.  He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1985 with a Master of Archival Studies. His other degrees include B.A. (1981, history) from Acadia University, a Master of Divinity (1997) from Regis College, University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Education (2001) from Brock University. Prior to his appointment in 1996 as an archivist at the Archives of Ontario, Rick worked at a number of other archives and institutions: St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver (1985), United Church of Canada Archives, Vancouver(1985-6), United Church of Canada Archives, Toronto (1986-9), the University of Toronto Archives (1989-93), and Upper Canada College (1993-6, with shared work at two other archives in the Toronto vicinity). At the Archives of Ontario, he has held a number of senior positions in reference services and collection development and management. His experience, supervision of staff, and participation in outreach programs and professional organizations is extensive: Chair of the Archives of Ontario’s Communications Co-ordination Team, a member of the Graphic Materials Working Group of the Bureau of Canadian Archivists’ Planning Committe on Descriptive Standards, etc. In 2000 he received the Amethyst Award (Ontario Public Service) and in 2003 the VOICE Award for Customer Service Excellence (Management Board Secretariat of the Government of Ontario).

Lakehead University is pleased to announce that Christopher Tomasini has been hired as the Orillia Campus Librarian. Chris received his Masters of Information Science from the University of Toronto in 2004. Prior to joining Lakehead University, he worked as a librarian at Miller Thomson LLP, as a reference librarian at the University of St. Michael’s College and most recently as a reference librarian at Durham College/University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Janice Mutz

Roma Kail has joined the staff of the E.J. Pratt Library, Victoria University (in the University of Toronto) as a Reference, Research and Instruction Librarian. Roma has an MLS from Western University and an MA in English from the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to joining Victoria University, Roma worked as a Librarian at the University of Saskatchewan, Ryerson University and York University.
