Call for Proposals for OLA Superconference 2011

The OLA Super Conference 2011 Planning Committee would like to ask for your help in developing sessions for OLA Super Conference 2011! Submissions are now open for sessions in the 2011 Super Conference, scheduled to take place from February 2nd to 5th 2011, at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre.

The planning committee welcomes proposals of both sessions you would be willing to present, and simply ones that you would like to see. There is no limit to the number of proposals an individual can submit.

The deadline for proposals is May 31st.

2010’s conference is on Friday, June 11th and the theme is Going Mobile!

People expect the information they want to be at their fingertips – anytime – easily – and instantly. Libraries need to explore and experiment with new mobile technologies and tools that will ensure they meet and service their users in this new reality.

Don’t miss this chance to spend a day with leading thinkers and practitioners who are going mobile. It will be an opportunity to gain new insights and to reflect on how your institution is preparing to meet the exciting opportunities and new challenges of the mobile environment.

Keynote Speaker: Jason Griffey

Jason Griffey is the Head of Library Information Technology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His latest book, Mobile Technology and Libraries, part of Neal-Schuman’s “The Tech Set“, and his previous book, Library Blogging, with Karen A. Coombs, are both available through the OLAStore. You can find his online presentations and representations at www.jasongriffey.net.

Jason is the author of the American Libraries Perpetual Beta blog, and is also a columnist for the ALA TechSource blog. Jason was named one of Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers in 2009, and is regularly invited to speak on libraries, the social economy, mobile technology, and other technology related issues.

Who from OLITA is going to Code4Lib North?

Code4Lib North’s first meeting is happening soon! Here are the 4Ws:

Where: Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario (exact rooms to be determined)
When: Thursday (afternoon/evening) and Friday (all day), 6-7 May 2010
What’s it going to cost me?: No charge. Queen’s University is generously donating the space,
the Internet access, and food

Code4Lib North is a local chapter of the Code4Lib community of people involved in libraries and technology. The annual Code4Lib conference began in 2006. Since then, several local chapters have started in different regions of the United States, as well as in Japan, Hungary, and the Netherlands. This is the first Canadian chapter meeting. Code4Lib North is meant to bring together librarians, programmers, and other interested people from Ontario, Quebec, New York, Vermont, and nearby areas.

OLITA Award for Technological Innovation

Congratulations to Project Conifer, a consortial team lead by Dan Scott at Laurentian University, this year’s winner of the OLITA Award for Technological Innovation!

Project Conifer is a consortial installment of the Evergreen Open Source library system. This is the first academic consortium to implement Evergreen and largest bibliographic database supported by Evergreen and went live in August 2009.

Member institutions include: Leddy Library, J.N. Desmarais Library, Algoma University, Wishart Library, University of Sudbury, Hearst, Bibliothèque Maurice-Saulnier, Huntington College Library, Paul Martin Law Library, Northern Ontario School of Medicine (West), HRSRH Health Sciences Library, Northern Ontario School of Medicine (East), Xstrata Process Support Centre Library, NOHIN, Instructional Media Centre, Laboratoire de didactiques, E.S.E., Vale Inco, Mines Library, Willet Green Miller Centre, Art Gallery of Sudbury, Curriculum Resource Centre, Sault Area Hospital and Centre Franco-Ontarien de Folklore.
