The Slow Library Movement

The “Slow Library Movement” was introduced by Mark Leggot during his presentation at Dalhousie last November. In his words, Slow Library is “a new approach to the management and development of library services. The Slow Library movement is modeled on the concepts of the Slow Food movement, with a liberal dash of open source development philosophies. It is not about slowing down: the core concepts are the development of local staff capacity, encouraging community and the use of open, modular library resources and services.”

Is Slow Library a wrench in the meme of Library 2.0? Not at all. Mark points to social tagging and the writeable catalog as prime examples of how a community can participate in the development of the library.

Still, Slow Library calls to attention that there are different ways of doing Library 2.0. To me, the central concepts of local identity and capacity can make a big difference in how libraries do business:

  • Libraries can purchase 2.0 packages from vendors, or use open source solutions and develop in-house skills. Better yet, going beyond in-house skill, an open library can provide APIs so that its patrons can develop their own library experience. A library can build patron skills by offering training sessions on its APIs.
  • Libraries can replicate 2.0 solutions developed by other libraries, or talk to their local user community and let their people experiment. Innovation always starts locally before getting picked up by the larger pool.
  • Libraries can allocate large swaths of their budget to 2.0 overhauls, or fund small changes that fit in with other more traditional library services. Slow Library reminds us that web content can be like fast food - people still need their physical library and books for a complete diet.

A local focus is a way of slowing down, or as Mark prefers, achieving tempo and balance.

Slow Library is more of a concept than a movement at this point, but the dialog is continuing. See ongoing posts by Ryan Deschamps and Jessamyn West. I am posting related articles here.
